I checked this book out a while ago at the library, and it turned out to be one of my favorites. Another book set during the same time period and dealing with women during the Renaissance is The Birth of Venus by Sarah Dunant. It's a fabulous read that details the life of a young girl living in Florence during the cruel and inhibiting reign of Savonarola. It tells the journey she takes to find just a bit of freedom in Florence while giving quite a bit of history regarding famous artists and their work.

I haven't read a lot of historical fiction. I don't think I've ever read any "girly" historcial fiction (as someone called it), but this book looks really interesting to me.

I've seen a review or two on this book. I love reading books that almost breathe an essence of a location into your reading experience, and it sounds like this is one of them. Great review!
