Your sentiments are exactly why I avoid reading reviews for books, movies or TV shows. Instead I tend to skim reviews. Many a time I've been disappointed and wonder if not knowing so much before hand would have lead to a different (better) experience.

High expectations have well, not ruined a book, but it did make me disappointed a time or two. :( I really don't think this one is for me.

Yes, hype about a book and especially a movie can really ruin things. I loved this book, which I hadn't read any reviews for but, a book that was highly praised and raved about that I couldn't wait to read was: The G. Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I thought it was going to be awesome from all the talk but, while I enjoyed it I was left wondering what all they hype was really about.

Lovely review and so thorough. Book hype tends to work against enjoyment of a book in my experience. Perhaps because we each have unique criteria for a "superb" book? Whatever the reason, I think it's good to have a spectrum of opinions on a book. I read enough blogs to know who has tastes similar to mine and I suspect other blog readers are the same.

I'm glad you reviewed the book!
