My BBAW Interview with Violet Crush
Last year I didn’t take advantage of the BBAW interviews and have really regretted it. It’s a way to get to know another blogger and I can’t for the life of me remember why I didn’t participate. I was not about to let that happen again, so I added my blog into the hat. After a mishap with both of our partners (mine was on vacation), I was thrilled to be paired with Violet. I have been reading Violet Crush for a long time now. I love her blog (and you will too, if you haven’t already) and was so excited to learn more about her. What a pleasure. Oh, and isn’t she beautiful?
Thank you for spending the day with me at The Literate Housewife Review, Violet!
Literate Housewife: When did you first discover your love for reading?
Violet Crush: My neighbor had once lent me a copy of “Round the World in 80 days”. I think that might be the first novel I read. I never gave it back and she forgot about it. I didn’t remind her, oops. That might have been the first time I discovered that I loved reading but I wasn’t really aware of it until 7th grade when I picked up a Nancy Drew book and flipped through it in the school library. Beauty and the beast was the first book I ever checked out from my school library or any library for that matter. I think it started from there. I owe a lot to Nancy Drew

LH: Are there any influential readers in your life?
VC: Ummm…no. My parents do read occasionally but I don’t really think I was influenced by them.
LH: Please tell me a little about your reading preferences. Have they changed over time?
VC: Definitely. I started with Nancy Drews and then went on to Ghoosbumps, Mills and Boon, Nora Roberts, Sidney Sheldon, Mary Higgins Clark and now I read a lot more than that. I read multicultural fiction, woman’s fiction, romance, fantasy, thrillers, memoirs, autobiographers, dystopian, paranormal, horror, comedy, chick lit and so much more. I’ll be reading my first Graphic novel soon. All this is because of blogging, really.
LH: What is your favorite book? Why? Is it written by your favorite author? If not, who is your favorite author?
VC: I don’t think I can really answer this in singular. I loved Shantaram, A long way gone, Legends of Pensam, The Thirteenth Tale, Seduce me at Sunrise and so many more. And to think of it, these are the first time I have read most of these authors.
I love Nora Roberts, Sidney Sheldon, Mary Higgins Clark, Lisa Kleypas etc etc. Typical choices, I know, but that’s just the way it is.
LH: What prompted you to start your blog?
VC: One day I was getting bored in my office and was reading a blog for timepass and I thought why not open a blog of my own? So I did. Honest. There was no more thought to it than maybe for a minute. I didn’t even plan to continue blogging after the first post. But one thing led to another and here I am. It’s been more than 3 years now although I have been book blogging only for little over a year.
LH: Of all the reviews you have posted, which is your favorite?
VC: Oh well, isn’t that the most difficult question? I think The Forgotten Garden, because many people told me either through their posts or through emails that they bought the book after reading the review. I loved the book and it would be cool if others read and loved it as much as I did.
LH: In what ways, if any, has blogging impacted your reading life?
VC: I read more and read very diverse genres now. I’ve discovered so many great books which I otherwise wouldn’t have.
LH: Do you plan out your posts each week or is your schedule more fluid?
Nope, no planning for me. Scheduled posts are very rare at VioletCrush.
LH: Have you had the opportunity to meet any other book bloggers in person?
VC: NO, but how I wish I did. When I see photos on other blogs about blogger meets and all, I always wish I could be there too. Maybe someday.
LH: What are your thoughts on eReaders? Do you own one?
VC: I like eReaders. I don’t have one but I might buy one soon. They are travel friendly and pocket friendly. But I still prefer print books.
LH: Do you have any goals for your blog over the next year?
VC: Goals? Who? Me? Not really. I like to take things as they come. I would like to blog more, read more and comment more. Maybe improve my writing so that there are less grammatical mistakes in my reviews
That’s about it.
LH: Any words of advice for someone thinking about starting their own book blog?
VC: Do it because you love it, really. It’s a lot of work. Be sincere, honest, open minded and friendly. That’s about it I guess. Take the plunge, there will be many bloggers to help you out. We book bloggers are a friendly lot aren’t we? And enjoy.
Thank you very much Jennifer for having me here today. It was an absolute pleasure. Also, a hello and a “big” wave to anyone who is reading this.
LH: Thank you, Violet! I’ve enjoyed spending the day with you!

I almost bought Shantaram last week, but put it back on the shelves as it was so long and I’d never heard of it. I’m regretting that now!

I passed on the interview part of BBAW and now I’m regretting it too. I just felt like maybe I was too new to the blogging world to participate, which now seems like the silliest excuse ever.

I agree with her advice about blogging – you really do have to love what you’re doing because it is a lot of work.
I just scrolled back up and saw the extra contest entry – very cool! I’ll take an extra entry on the Betsy Tacy series. Thanks!

Posted: Sep 15th, 2009 at 10:46 pm14Reply to this comment.Thank you for the wonderful interview! Violet is one of my favorite bloggers and I appreciate the opportunity to get to know her better. I love hearing stories about how people found their love for reading. I am not sure when it happened for me as it feels like I’ve always loved to read. So, when people can pinpoint it, I enjoy hearing about it.
I’ve been wanting to read Shantaram along with several of the other favorites Violet mentioned. I also really enjoyed The Thirteenth Tale.
(I’d like to add an entry for the Hunger Games series, if that’s okay. I already subscribe to VioletCrush.

I remember reading Nancy Drew and Goosebumps when I was younger. My daughter inherited all my R.L. Stine books and now she’s a big fan!
Got something to say?
