Great review! I hadn't thought about the sparseness of the marriage and the sparseness of the house (no ornamentation), but that is a great comparison. I found this novel so rich and beautifully constructed. One of my favorites so far this year.

What a wonderful review Jennifer. I have been hearing a lot about this book and find it very intriguing. I can't wait to read it. Lucky you to get a review copy! This sounds like a wonderful book to discuss with a book club.

Ti, there is plenty to discuss with this book. I think it would be good for a book club so long as people like more dense fiction.

Thanks for your comments everyone!

I loved this book 0 it was one of my favourites of 2009. I'm so pleased to see that you enjoyed it too. It is also great to discover that Simon Mawer has written lots of other books already, so I'm hoping to get to them soon. I've got a copy of The Fall and hope it is as good as this one.

Is this one book club worthy? Is there enough to discuss? I had planned to pitch this to my club for this year's list but I'm not sure there is enough to discuss.
