Normally the girls and I hit the pool on Saturdays. Not this week. It was simply too hot. Instead, we met up with my friend Miki and her daughter Sam and headed to the mall and then the art museum.
Since talking with a tweep about nail polish, I had the bug to buy some new O.P.I. nail poslish. We did that waiting for Miki and Sam. Then we spent some time browsing in Barnes and Noble. Emma picked up Beazus and Ramona, Allison picked up a middle reader Nancy Drew book and I snagged the audiobook version of Testimony by Anita Shrieve for $5.98. You’ve got to love clearance audiobooks.
The walk between the parking garage and the Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke, VA was just a couple of blocks. Still, when we opened the door and felt the blast of air conditioning, it felt like heaven. Saturdays offer free admission and many activities for children. The girls really seemed to enjoy the scavenger hunt. It was a fun way to discuss and think about art.
There were two sculptures that stood out to all of us. Emma said the men, one made out of scotch tape and the other made out of fur, freaked her out, but when Sam and Ally wanted their pictures taken with them, Emma wouldn’t be left behind.

The second sculpture is one of my favorite. The knight looks like he’s a melting sandcastle. The girls thought he was frozen and had ice cycles hanging on him. Either way, it’s such an interesting piece.

After eating lunch we came home and did our nails. The girls are wearing Yodel Me on My Cell with Silver Shatter. I’m wearing A-Rose at Dawn… Broke By Noon, which just so happens to match my shirt today almost exactly.
Have a wonderful Sunday and stay cool.

Sounds like you did a great job beating the heat! I love that sculpture of a knight, it’s so interesting. Art museums often have surprises like that, you never know what to expect.
That is the perfect way to beat the heat! Those sculpture are amazing, and nothing wrong with giving the kids a little culture. I have a fascination with those names of the OPI colors. Imagine how awesome it would be to come up with them!
Wait, that sculpture is made out of Scotch tape? I wonder how long it took to create that.
My wife is really into nail polish…actually follows a ton of nail polish blogs. I didn’t have any ideas that there were such things as “nail polish” blogs. Amazing. If you’re interested in knowing more about nail polish, my wife can tell you a lot. She has quite a collection herself. E-mail me and I’ll have her get in contact with you…
Someone shoulda put books into the laps of either or both of those sculptures on either side of the girls! I thought they were reading at first glance!
LOVE OPI – I’ve had my nails done for more years than I care to admit. My fave OPI colors are “Friar Friar Pants on Fire, Berry Tubular and Senorita Rose-a-lita”
These are simply adorable shots…and amazing sculptures!
I agree that it’s too hot for even the pool today…the mall and museum sounds perfect for beating the heat! Great pics of the sculptures and I love Emma’s descriptions – one made out of scotch tape, one made out of fur…Fantastic! The second, the knight is fascinating. The pieces holding him up remind me of wet said how it forms in cone-like shapes.
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and stay cool!
Sounds like a great time for all of you. The photos are precious.
